Less Web Traffic + More Customer Conversions = More Profit

I had a former client contact me about doing another website redesign for their business. She said that it seemed that they were getting lots of visitors but that they were not getting conversions. The website we had built for her was done back in 2001; I remember it well because I recall being at a conference in San Francisco shortly before 9/11. A lot has certainly changes with the web and with design since then, so I agreed that a new, fresh look would be a step in the right direction.

Her goals included having a mobile friendly website and just having a more moderns look and feel. I discovered that they were not capturing any prospects (developing an email list) and their customers were also not getting immediate responses to their inquiries. After the redesign, I started to get notifications of their inquiries, so I knew at least that was working. I discussed what seemed to be a positive trend with customer inquiries, and at first she said it seemed to be about the same, but by the end of the week, she admitted that she had a great week, with several new customers on board. I always love to hear success stories from my customers.

This clients website happens to get lots of search engine traffic. We discussed the fact that the rankings would change, but that we would help them make adjustments after everything settled. What this client notes was that “although our traffic went down, our inquiries and sales are up during a season that is typically slow.” I had discussed conversions with her, so she gets it, but the simple math looks like this:

Poor Converting Website
5,000 monthly visitors
0.5% conversions = 25 customers

Site With Good Conversion Rate
2,500 monthly visitors (Assume a loss of 50% traffic)
2.0% conversion rate = 50 customers

In the end, it’s not always about traffic, so if you are seeing visitors come to your website (in Analytics) but not seeing the percentage of those visitors convert, you need to ask why. If you don’t know the answer, you need to contact someone who can help you. And by the way, I can certainly help you. :-)

I had another client this week whose website does not get a lot of traffic, but it was also not converting. I made some edits to his home page and his about page, and over the next week, he said he saw an increase in calls, and actually wrote some new business. His comment was “did you do something to my site last week after we spoke?” And I reminded him of the content he approved.

When to Use Professional Video

So I fell a bit behind in the Video Marketing Challenge. I actually shot lots of video, but due to travel, could not post it. The key is staying focused and always moving forward. I actually shot a few videos while I was away, so those will be forthcoming.

Also, my last video that I uploaded, got some activity just based on the title as many people were able to find it in the search engines, so remember how important it is to name your videos well.

Several weeks back, I shot a small snippet of video at a friends seminar. I did this for a few reasons. One was to have a video for the week, but the other was to emphasize that sometimes you want (need) to have professional quality video. If Jim wanted to promote his event, he certainly would not want to use my video clip. The audio quality is poor and it’s not even edited. If the choice is no video or poor video, I say go with what you’ve got. Never give yourself an excuse to not make progress. Enjoy!

Google Follows Facebook with +1 Button

Seeming to follow in the footsteps of Facebook’s “liking” of a status or a Facebook business page, Google is implementing a “+1″ button where users can “vote up” a search result that they like. According to their “learn about +1” video, they will allow for integration of +1 into websites in a similar fashion as we now see Facebook like buttons. The program is currently being rolled out slowly, but you can sign up for it at http://www.google.com/experimental/ if you want to check it out. Below is a screen shot of a blog post that I gave the “+1″ to and I have encircled both the indication that it has been “voted up” (or 1 up’d) as well as the +1 button.

Now, when I look at my Google profile, I see this listed under the tab labeled “+1’s” (you can click the image below to enlarge it.)

Given that social media activity such as tweets and (Facebook) likes are having an impact on organic search engine optimization, I am sure this will play into rankings as well. Stay tuned!

Using Your Smart Phone to Reach Hot Prospects

A great way to improve your website conversion rates is by using a “live operator” service where prospects can get their questions answered by you as they are preparing to make a buying decision. Many people would rather ask a few questions via chat as opposed to calling where they feel they might be pressured into a purchase and others may not want to send an email because they don’t know how long it will take to get a response.

There are many great solutions on the market for live operator services, but one in particular that I found helpful was Website Alive. What I like the most about Website Alive is the Phone App that allows you to run your chat client from your Smart Phone. For an independent business owner this allows you to connect with real time prospects without having to sit in front of a computer all day or outsourcing this task. The end result; higher conversion rates and increased profits.

Another “Face Lift” for OldSchoolSEO.com

I am thankful to those who have followed my blog in spite of it’s ugliness. I could lie and say it was a test to see how many followed I could attract, just based on content, or I could just say the it never made it to the top of my list for a host of reasons.

I will say this that if you don’t yet have a custom blog theme, you really need to get one. I have seen the results on other blogs, where people are more apt to stay, and most of all, to share your posts when your blog has a nice look and feel.

I am however thankful to finally have a blog that has some character. For that, I owe thanks to my good friend Todd Dawson at Dawson Studios who created the header for me. Actually, he created several, and I crowdsourced it to my Facebook friends, and this is the one they chose. I actually was in favor of the other one, but I have learned that marketing is not about what you like, it’s about what others like.

I will point out that I am highlighting my coaching and consulting services as well as my speaking services with the new blog. I really have done a poor job at marketing myself from this blog, and I am truly seeking to add more speaking engagements to my schedule this year, so if you hear of any, please send them my way.

Thanks for letting me share. I am really not an “all about me” kind of guy, bit I wanted to at least acknowledge the new blog and most of all the graphic genius (Todd Dawson) behind it.

In closing, I will ask my famous “how can I help you?” and I ask you to respond either via comments or via my contact page.
