Microsoft’s main advantage over steve job’s Apple would be compatibility. As more and more users favor the mac over pc, i guess that advantage would eventually be insignificant that they would be forced to merge. just my two cents…

@ Luke – I agree that change can be good… when planned as opposed to nearly losing your computer and having to scramble to replace it. I will keep you posted on the rest.

@ Ananga – I look forward to less stress. I forgot to mention that “data failure” that occurred last year when I was writing my last book. I was transferring a file from PC to PC on a thumb drive and somehow a fatal error occurred and there went a days or two of writing. I should have switched back then

@ Ami – I have not gotten a machine yet, just a mental buy-in. I don’t want to move too fast, but I am going to the Apple store today. I am sure it will be a laptop with all of the bells and whistles. Who knows, Mac may make a designer out of me yet. I have to say, my wife’s laptop with Vista has been relatively trouble free… but that’s not enough to outweigh the overall troubles I have had.

@ Detlev – Thanks for the visit from Germany I was just talking to a colleague today telling him how companies can actually save money in the long haul by using Macs because it will increase productivity and reduce downtime and maintenance. I am personally looking forward to all of the above.

@ Mike – Most of my Mac friends are VERY happy Mac users. There is the occasional glitch, but I’d take that over the daily or weekly glitches that my PC’s have seemed to suffer from.

I haven’t had any significant problems with Macs since I began using them in 2002. I too was a windows user before then and my frustration moved me to a Mac. People told me it would be a mistake. It wasn’t. It’s the best computer experience there is. Enjoy your new lower stress computing life.

Have been on the “Apple track” since 1987 and rarely experienced problems. Had to deal with Windows machines on the job and found them to be a hassle.
Very rarely had to bring a Mac in for repair (my old 700 MHz iBook tops with 3 times in some 6 or so years). Hardly ever an OS crash, while some applications do at times.
So: Welcome and enjoy.

Which model Mac did you choose? I am totally frustrated with MS Vista but bought into it on price (not the same as value:). Now if I can load Leopard onto my HP laptop that would be great!

I switched to Mac 5 years ago after figuring out I was wasting a lot of time on my laptop dealing with crashes. I’m very glad I did and will never use windows again – it’s stressful and I’m an anti-stress writer so Macs and my work go hand in hand. I hope your switch goes smoothly and you enjoy your new low maintenance, high-productivity experience.

We all need a change in our life. It’s figuring how much of a change we really need. Like Mothership says “don’t have to give up microsoft if you don’t want.” there is the Parallels Desktop for Mac, for instance.

@ Dan – I don’t expect perfection (we’re not in heaven yet), but I do expect stability which is what the majority of Mac users attest to – far greater that the cries of the downtrodden PC users that are joined at the hip to Mr. Gates & company.

@ Mothership – Thanks. The funnier part of that are the folks that work at Microsoft that use Macs or run dual O/S machines (Linux/MS). I think that is pretty telling.

Welcome to the fold. I ditched Microsoft for good some years ago, just DONE with it. And anyway, if you have a Mac you don’t have to give up microsoft if you don’t want. I use all the mac programs and have for years (musician) but my husband uses windows on a mac and is way happier with it than he ever was with any of his Dell machines.
Enjoy. It’s a thing of beauty.

As a current mac user I can only say one thing.

“Mistaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaake!”

Don’t expect the machines to ‘just work’. But the OS is rather nice. =P
